It may come as a surprise, but I'm repeatedly asked a certain question by both friends and strangers alike:

"So, Dave, I know you're involved with design, but what exactly does that mean? What exactly do you do?"

My answer varies from situation to situation. Sometimes it leads to an explanation of Web site interfaces, other times I mention typography and page layout, and sometimes I discuss logo design and corporate branding. However, regardless of my answer, it often elicits some surprising responses:

"Oh, so you're a computer programmer then! Wow, that's great, the tech industry is such an up-and-coming place to be these days..."

"Oh, I see, so you're an artist! How neat! So who is your favorite painter?"

Clearly I need to do a better job of communicating what I do!

“It's my hope that in reading this section, you and all visitors to the site will gain a better appreciation for design in general, as well as a better understanding of what sets me apart from my peers.”

Thus the need for this section of my Web site: Dave's Design Philosophy. The fact is that I'm passionate about good design, and I don't believe its importance in this world can be overstated. However, I realize that design is a general term that has applications in a variety of diverse industries and occupations. I believe it is this diversity that leads to the confusion and mystery that most people experience when trying to understand what a designer does on a day-to-day basis.

As a result, I feel it is important to include this section in my Web site as a way of explaining what design means to me, as well as the philosophies and rules that guide me in everything I do. It's my hope that in reading this section, you and all visitors to the site will gain a better appreciation for design in general, as well as a better understanding of what sets me apart from my peers.
